Protecting Natural Hair from Chlorine in the Swimming Pool During Summer

As summer rolls in and the temperatures rise, many of us flock to swimming pools to cool off and enjoy the outdoors. However, for those with natural hair, particularly curly or textured hair, the chlorine in pool water can be a real concern. Chlorine is notorious for causing dryness, brittleness, and even discoloration in hair. But fear not! I've created a list of effective ways to protect your natural hair and keep it healthy while enjoying your time in the pool.

1. Pre-Swim Preparation

Before diving into the pool, it’s essential to prepare your hair to minimize chlorine absorption:

  • Wet Your Hair: Start by saturating your hair with clean water before entering the pool. This helps to prevent your hair from absorbing too much chlorinated water.

  • Apply a Protective Oil: Consider applying a natural oil to your hair before swimming. Oils can act as a barrier against chlorine and help retain moisture in your hair. The Ultimate Protection Oil

2. Wear a Swim Cap

Investing in a good quality swim cap made from silicone or lycra can significantly reduce chlorine exposure. Make sure the cap fits snugly around your head to prevent water from seeping in.

3. Rinse Immediately After Swimming

As soon as you're out of the pool, rinse your hair thoroughly with clean water. This helps wash away chlorine and prevents it from lingering in your hair.

4. Use a Clarifying Shampoo

Use a clarifying shampoo specifically designed to remove chlorine buildup from your hair. Look for shampoos that are sulfate-free and gentle to maintain your hair's natural oils.

5. Deep Condition Regularly

To counteract the drying effects of chlorine, incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your hair care routine. Choose conditioners that are moisturizing and nourishing for your hair type.

6. Protective Hairstyles

Consider styling your hair in protective hairstyles such as braids, twists, or buns before swimming. This can help minimize the amount of hair exposed to chlorine and reduce tangling.

7. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water helps keep your hair hydrated from the inside out, which can also mitigate the drying effects of chlorine exposure.

8. Avoid Over-Washing

While it's important to remove chlorine after swimming, avoid over-washing your hair, as this can strip it of natural oils. Opt for a gentle, more natural approach by using my Moisture Milk Shampoo Bar or Batana Oil Shampoo Bar.

9. DIY Rinse

Consider making a DIY rinse using apple cider vinegar and distilled water (mixed in equal parts) to help neutralize chlorine after swimming. Rinse your hair with this solution and then follow with a conditioner. I personally love this hack for myself!!

10. Protect Hair from the Sun

Lastly, don't forget to protect your hair from sun damage. Consider wearing a hat or scarf while lounging by the pool to shield your hair from UV rays.

By following these tips and incorporating them into your summer swimming routine, you can enjoy the pool while keeping your natural hair healthy, moisturized, and protected from chlorine. Embrace your curls and waves without worrying about the negative effects of pool water—have a splashing good time this summer!
